SensiblePM 019 | Project Management Certification Options

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has seven certifications for project managers and one for business analysts. Cornelius Fichtner and Kevin Reilly join Mark to discuss these certifications and end up providing details about each certification.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is the largest and most renown organization providing certifications for Project Managers. PMI is a global organization with over 500,000 certification holders in 180 different countries. During this episode we reviewed the following certifications provided by PMI.

Project Management professional (PMP)

The PMP is the most sought after and probably the most important certification a project manager can obtain. This certification demonstrates that you have experience, education and competency to lead teams as a project manager and deliver projects. Many employers recognize the value that a certified project management professional brings to the table and often include obtaining the PMP as a requirement for employment. Additionally, this certification allows a project manager to obtain increased compensation from their employer.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

The CAPM is a great certification for a new project manager or one that is just starting their career in project management. This certification does not require the candidate to have the level of experience required for the PMP, however requires a knowledge of basic project management principals and processes as described in the PMBOK.

Program Management Professional (PgMP)

The PgMP is for program managers who want to demonstrate they have the experience, education and competency to manage programs. Programs are different from projects in that they usually consist of multiple projects as well as operational activities, all that are aligned with organizational objectives.

Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)

The PfMP is the certification for portfolio management. A portfolio consists of multiple projects and often programs that align with organizational objectives. This certification is for those portfolio managers who want to demonstrate that they have the experience, education and competency to manage portfolios.

PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)

The PMI-ACP is for those who are interested in certifying that they have the knowledge about Agile methodologies and the ability to apply those Agile principles and practices to projects. The PMI-ACP certification concentrates on Agile principles and does not prescribe a specific methodology, rather the application of Agile principles and practices.

PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)

The PMI-PBA is the newest certification for PMI and is actually still in Beta right now. The certification is targeted for those who want to concentrate on the analysis work that is required during the project. This certification highlights the ability for an individual to work with stakeholders to identify and document requirements of a project.

PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)

The PMI-RMP certification is for those who want to focus on risk management. Risk management is a critical component of any project and this certification highlights the importance of managing risk during a project. Additionally, risk management can also be extended outside the bounds of a project.

PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)

The PMI-SP certification is targeted toward those who focus on the skill and art of building detailed schedules. For many very complicated and large projects, a skilled scheduling professional is critical to the success of the project.
